Rehome
🐾 Need to Rehome Your Dog?
At All Paws on Deck, we understand that life happens. Sometimes families find themselves unable to keep their dog.
However, we are a foster-based rescue with limited space and resources, and we are not able to take in owner surrenders.
If your dog is currently in your home, they are safe, and their care and placement remain the owner’s responsibility.
❗ Important: Please Read First
-
We do not accept owner surrenders;
-
We do not take in litters from private homes;
-
We do not provide free veterinary care for owned pets;
-
We are not animal control;
This allows us to focus our resources on dogs with no safe place to go.
✅ We Will Help You Rehome Responsibly
While we cannot take your dog, we can guide you through safe and effective rehoming.

🧭 Step 1: Get Your Dog Ready
Dogs are much easier to place when they are:
-
Up to date on vaccines;
-
Rabies vaccinated (required by law and must be given by a licensed veterinarian)
-
Spayed or neutered;
-
Treated for fleas, ticks, and worms;
-
Evaluated honestly for behavior;
👉 If your dog is not altered or vaccinated, this is the first step.
Important vaccinations:
-
Rabies (legally required)
-
DHPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvo, Parainfluenza) — highly recommended to protect your dog and others
Looking for affordable options?
-
Low-cost spay/neuter clinics such as POA Spay
-
NorwichVet - 860-889-1387
-
DHPP Vacvines: Text VAX to 860-800-6563 (IF available, we can give your dog a DHPP vaccine thanks to PETCO Foundation and Walmart Grant).
📸 Step 2: Create a Strong Listing
Include:
-
Clear, bright photos (face + full body)
-
Age, breed, weight
-
Personality (friendly? shy? good with kids/dogs?)
-
Medical status (be honest)
-
Why you are rehoming
👉 Honesty prevents failed adoptions.
🌎 Step 3: Where to Post Your Dog
Use multiple platforms:
-
Facebook rehoming groups (search your town + “dog rehoming”)
-
Friends, family, coworkers
-
Local community pages
-
Adopt-a-Pet.com Rehome program
🧑🤝🧑 Step 4: Screen Adopters Carefully
Ask:
-
Do you own or rent? (are pets allowed?)
-
Current pets (are they vaccinated and altered?)
-
How many hours will the dog be alone?
-
Who is responsible for care?
-
Are you financially prepared for vet care?
👉 Always trust your instincts.
🧑🤝🧑 Step 5: Place Your Dog Safely
-
You may choose to rehome your dog with or without a fee
-
A fee can help deter bad intentions, but it is not required
-
Many rehoming groups successfully place dogs without fees
👉 What matters most is who the dog goes to, not the price
Focus on:
-
Asking good questions
-
Verifying landlord approval if renting
-
Meeting in person before placement
-
Taking your time — do not rush
⚠️ Be Cautious Of:
-
People unwilling to answer questions
-
People rushing to take the dog immediately
-
People asking for multiple dogs
-
Anyone who makes you feel uncomfortable
👉 Trust your instincts — if something feels off, it probably is
⚠️ Our Role
All Paws on Deck does not:
-
Take custody of dogs listed for rehoming
-
Screen adopters for private placements
-
Provide guarantees or assume liability
All placements are strictly between the current owner and the new adopter.
❤️ Final Thought
Rehoming your dog responsibly takes effort—but it ensures they go to a safe, loving home.
We appreciate you taking the time to do this the right way.
